Edith Mary Fynn  (1927 - 2005)

(If it's in red and underlined then it's a link to more information)

Edith "Mary" Fynn was born 2nd April 1927 in Cambridge. Until her death in 2005, Mary latterly lived at "Green Gates", Histon Road, Cambridge to which bungalow the family had first moved in 1939. She and her second husband, Seton Mitchell (by family co-incidence also a former College Butler) spent their time looking after their beloved gardens.

Mary tells many graphic tales of her life in Cambridge; including one of cycling down Castle Hill in the ice...  Another story is of when she borrowed her brother's (my father's) canoe whilst he was away from home during the Second World War.  After one particular trip she tripped and fell in the river. She went straight home forgetting to clean the river mud from the canoe. Her brother, Geoffrey, came home on one of his very rare (Mary can't even remember him writing home either!) return visits and found the canoe filthy with dried on mud.  There was a memorable row and a long silence!.

Later in her working life Mary was a secretary at St John's College where her husband Seton was College Butler.
