(If it's in red and underlined then it's a link to more information) I have come across the following names in my research. I don't know yet where they fit in if at all: Benjamin FYNN: Born c.1784. He married Elizabeth Coe (See also Other Fynns) on 25.07.1805 at St Botolphs. A fellow family historian who has an interest in the COE family suspects that Elizabeth Coe is a brother of William Coe, born in Cherry Hinton 1788. He can’t find the father, Richard Coe. As an aside: most records show Benjamin marrying Elizabeth Coe in St Botolphs on 25th July 1805 with the name spelt FINN. I have examined the parish record to find that it actually says: "FINN (born and baptised FYNN) Benjamin (X) and Elizabeth Coe botp. Witness: Thos. Lupson (No second witness)." The ‘X’ after Benjamin indicates that he ‘made his mark’ as opposed to signing his name. So it is not surprising that the surname was mis-spelt. As an aside I have found a record of Banns being read the previous year in the same parish for the marriage of Benjamin Fynn and a Rose Cain (botp). If it’s the same Benjamin why didn’t they get married? Did she die, did they fall out or as Sandra suggests, was it a false alarm? Benjamin and Elizabeth had at least two children:
Up until recently I always thought that this Benjamin was the Benjamin who died in 1808 aged 24 and is buried at St Botolphs. But as can be seen in the Extracts of 1841 Census and in the Extracts of 1851 Census, a William Fynn born in c.1815 had his mother in law, Elizabeth Fynn, née Coe, a widow, living with him. Was there another Benjamin we have not found or…? If you have MS Excel click on Benjamin Tree to download his family tree which is now combined with William's. Robert married Eliza (Bn: c.1809) They had four children that I have found so far:
I note a gap in the family 1839 – 1844. I have found three Fynn births in St Andrew Less where Robert and Eliza lived, of which two might be theirs: Robert Fynn in 1842 and Fynn (a male) in 1843. In the 1841 census Robert and Eliza are living at 18 New Street, St Andrew Less with Mary Ann (3) and James (2). He was a Police Sergeant in what was a fairly new Cambridgeshire Constabulary. (See Extracts of 1841 Census.) By the 1851 census Robert and Eliza are living in The County Gaol, Castle Street, Chesterton with Mary Ann (13), James (12), Eliza (6), and John (5). Robert has become a ‘Turnkey’ in the interim. (See Extracts of 1851 Census.) The family does not appear on the 1881 census in Cambridge as FYNN. They had five children that I have found so far:
As above with Robert and Eliza Mary Ann Fynn born 1841, Robert Fynn in 1842 and Fynn (a male) in 1843 could be children of William and Martha. In the 1841 census (see Extracts of 1841 Census) William and Martha are living at 122 East Road, St Andrew Less, with William and James. Also at the address is an Elizabeth Fynn aged 60. See the comments in the extracts to suggest that William is a son of Benjamin By the 1851 census, (see Extracts of 1851 Census) William and Martha and family were still in St Andrew Less; having moved a few doors down the road to 140 East Road. Elizabeth Fynn was then aged 72. Also living with then is Elizabeth’s sister Sarah who is "very simple".
