Extracts from 1841 Census. (If it's in red and underlined then it's a link to more information) Taken from CFHS transcriptions on 20th March 2003.
Notes on the 1841 census: *********************** John Fynn: He was listed in the index as being recorded with his son Thomas (Cowling) Fynn in two separate entries at the University but in fact he was only in one of them:
Sarah Fynn: Sarah, John’s wife, was listed at an address in Tennis Court Road, St Mary the Less. We take this to be 11 Tennis Court Road but the enumerator has not recorded any numbers for that or other numbered houses in a street. The entry reads:
William and Susan Fynn: William was John Fynn’s eldest son. The census shows his address to be Green Street, St Michael. Again no number but we have other evidence to show that William lived at 23 Green Street. William and Susan married in 1826 and this census confirms other research that they had no children. The entry reads:
Were the two girls apprentice bookbinders or milliners? See also Extracts of 1851 Census. and Case Family. Maybe that Which Fynns are these...? will also amuse...
William and Martha Fynn: We have previously listed this family and a ‘cousin’ family; not knowing the origins. Their St Andrew the Less parish entry reads:
The answers as to who Elizabeth Fynn and Sarah ‘Cae’ are can be found in the 1851 census transcription (see Extracts of 1851 Census) but suffice to say the Sarah is actually Sarah Coe (listed as ‘very simple’) an aunt of William’s. Elizabeth is his mother. Benjamin Fynn’s wife was Elizabeth Coe. But we thought Benjamin had died in 1808. How was William born in c.1815? But note he was not born in Cambridgeshire! Tailor J. is a Journeyman Tailor. See above Notes.
Robert and Eliza Fynn: Again this family has always been listed as a ‘cousin’ family. Robert was born in 1809 and so could just be the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth if Benjamin was the one who dies in 1808. Their entry reads:
He must have been a very early Sergeant in a very new Cambridgeshire Constabulary.
Jane Fynn: I’m not quite certain who this Jane Fynn is. We have a daughter of John Fynn born in December 1816 (25years old at 1841) and we have who we think is the wife of John Cowling Fynn. John was born in 1810. He died in 1834 at Free School Lane, Cambridge. There is a baptism record of a Thomas Fynn in 1833; being a ‘son of John and Jane.’ Adding two and two… The record referring to Jane reads:
If she was the widow of John, would she not have Thomas with her or had he also died. But she may have been John ‘Porter’ Fynn’s daughter but then who was the Jane Fynn who dies in 1819?
Robert and Mary Finn: I suspect that Robert is the son of John ‘Porter’ Fynn for the reasons given before. The spelling changed back to Fynn by 1851. William Fynn, John’s son, was also a bookbinder at this time. But the entry shows he was not born in the County which we have previously assumed Robert had been because he was christened at age 0 days in St Botolphs. At the time of the 1841 Census they were living in St Botolphs. They had been married the previous year. Their entry reads:
