Overstream House, Victoria Avenue, Cambridge.

(If it's in red and underlined then it's a link to more information)

There were a lot of Fynn comings and goings to and from "Overstream House", Victoria Avenue, Chesterton. It was rented by John Fynn (1851-1925). It is hard by the River Cam.

The 1901 census shows John as being 50 years of age and living with his family and others at Overstream House, Victoria Avenue.  John describes himself as a tailor and his employment status as being a ‘worker working at home’. Also living at ‘Overstream’ were:

Mary Fynn, aged 49 years, John’s wife, born in North Littleton, Worcestershire.
Florence Neville, aged 27 years, step daughter, a school teacher, born in Cambridge.
Felix Fynn, aged 14 years, son.
Arthur Fynn, aged 12 years, son.
Geoffrey Fynn, aged 8 years, son.
Kate Ford, aged 22 years, employee of family, a tailoress.
Louis E. Jaccard, aged 35 years, born in Switzerland, a boarder, scientific … maker. (Do we take that to be a scientific instrument maker?) If he was an instrument maker a coincidence exists in that Arthur later worked as a metal turner for the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company.

We have a copy of the last Will and Testament of John Fynn. (John's Will) It was made in his own handwriting at "Overstream House" on 5th December 1921. It was witnessed by Frederick John Morley and George Theodore Stoakley. He left "all my furniture and moneys…" to Geoffrey Hyde Fynn of 208 Victoria Road, Chesterton. He asked that things be shared with his stepson, Frederick John Neville, and his stepdaughter, Mrs. Florence Darby. He did not own "Overstream House".

Since the early 1990's Overstream House has been a 'drop-in facility' for the homeless in the City. See Cambridge Evening News 1st Oct 1993.
