ARTHUR JOHN FYNN (1888-1918)

(If it's in red and underlined then it's a link to more information)

The symbol: '@@@@@@' indicates that detail has been hidden to reduce 'identity theft' risks. See Legal stuff.

Arthur John Fynn: Born 9th July 1888 at 11 Trumpington Street, St Mary the Great, Cambridge. (Certificate) Mary’s maiden name was back to SMITH. John describes himself now as a Tailor (master).

For the 1901 Census details return to John Fynn.

Arthur went to work at the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company in 1907 at the age of 19 years. He became a metal turner for the company.

Arthur married Fanny Edith Smith on 26th May 1917 at Saint Barnabas Church. Fanny, born 22nd December 1890 at 45 Mill Road, Cambridge, was the daughter of Oswald George Smith and Emily Smith (nee Pendrick). Oswald described himself as a 'Club Custodian' when Fanny was born and as a 'Bootmaker' when she married Arthur.

Arthur and Fanny had one son, Arthur John Freeth Fynn, who was born on 26th October 1917, at 23 Victoria Avenue, Chesterton, Cambridge. (Certificate)  Arthur’s occupation was given as metal turner (Journeyman).

Arthur John Fynn was still working at Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company. He became the operator of their first capstan lathe. This extra responsibility caused an increase of 1/2 penny on his hourly rate.  He was a keen photographer and made his own cameras.

Sadly, both Arthur John Fynn and Fanny died a year later in the December 1918. The record office reference numbers of both deaths are almost consecutive at 3b 868 and 3b 870 respectively. Apparently they succumbed to the ‘flu epidemic. Fanny's death at Overstream House on 7th December 1918 was registered by her father in law, John Fynn.

Arthur John Freeth Fynn was brought up by his maternal grandparents with Oswald Smith becoming his curator or guardian.  When Oswald died in 1934,at the time Arthur was still only 17 or so years and therefore a minor, his grandmother, Emily Smith and an uncle, Harry Pendrick Smith became his guardians.

A photograph has survived of "Grandfather Fynn & Arthur John Freeth  'Andy’ Fynn" taken in 1919... " Andy being 2 years of age." It was taken at 39 Perourne Street where he grew up. It is thought to have been the only occasion that John Fynn visited his grandson after the death of his daughter in law. Whilst he was always known as John by his guardian family to distinguish him from his father, he gained the name "Andy" during his school days.  He always carried pieces of string etc. and could always fix things.  He was a "Handy Andy". This is the name by which he was known by his friends and 'family by marriage'. He attended the Central School in Cambridge and starting in 1932 underwent a 7 year apprenticeship as a letter press compositor.          Click to enlarge the picture. GHFFampic4.jpg (284204 bytes)
During the Second World War 'Andy' served with the Royal Pay Corps.

On 23rd March 1947 "Andy" married Lily Evelyn Dorothy @@@@@@ (nee @@@@@).

Lily was born on 10th January 1922, the daughter of George @@@@@@ and Dorothy (nee Ashman).  Although known as Lily by her family, she preferred "Dorothy" and has been known as such by "Andy" and subsequent friends and family by marriage. Dorothy has been a shop worker.  She spent some of the war years winding armatures for the aircraft industry before working in the accounts office of the Cambridge Water Company; a job she resumed, part-time, after raising her children.

After the war, "Andy" worked as a compositor and machine operator for several printing firms in Cambridge.

"Andy" and Dorothy had two children:

Jonathan Freeth Fynn; born @@@@@@. He spent his working life in public transport.  Between 1968 and 1987 he was with @@@@@@; first in clerical and managerial services roles and then later as a bus conductor and driver. From 1987 to date he has been driving buses around @@@@@@.
Jonathan married Nadine Dieudonne @@@@@@ (born @@@@ 1958) on @@@@ 1985. Nadine's parents were Julien @@@@@@ and Kathleen Alice (nee @@@@@@).                      JFFYNN WEDDING.gif (121875 bytes)
